Do You Need Credit Card Debt Relief?
by Cecil Dellison

Finding yourself knee-deep in credit card debt can quickly cause you to run into financial difficulties. It is also one that will often take you a long time to get out of because of the interest that is added every month. Here are some credit card debt solutions that will help you to avoid bankruptcy.

Before you start looking around very far, it is important that you know that there are many credit card debt relief scams going on right now. This means that if you are in too much of a hurry to get debt relief that you could find yourself out a lot of money, in deeper debt, and possibly with a badly damaged credit score.

One of the scams that are frequently seen is the government credit card debt relief programs that are promised. The truth is that the government does not provide money for individuals for the purpose of credit card relief. The agencies that promise such money are only looking to take yours.

The government recently has provided some rebate checks to families, but that is about all you can expect. There are, however, some governmental programs that are in existence to help needy families with specific needs, such as providing consumer credit counseling, refinancing for your home, help with medical bills, and a few more.

There are also many agencies around, online and off-line, that offers services such as credit card debt settlement, or credit card debt negotiation. Many of these businesses are also fake, although there are some around that will genuinely try to help you. Usually, the main promise is to cut your debt in half, lower your payments, and repair your credit.

According to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), 1 in an announcement as far back as 2005, many of these groups actually want to help consumers declare bankruptcy. They are making it a first step instead of what it should be – the very last step in providing credit card debt solutions.

The way that most credit card debt settlement agencies work is to first attempt to bring about a credit card debt negotiation with your creditors. There is no actual guarantee that this will work, since it is entirely up to the credit card company to accept the proposal – or not. After that, they will then take a payment from you for a set amount of money each month. Out of that money, they will pay your creditors and take a monthly portion for their services.

In recent years, some people have reported that their money never made it to the creditors, and sometimes they never contacted the creditors to even attempt a debt reduction. In other situations, payments were made late, which damaged their credit even more.

If you really think about it, there is nothing that these agencies are doing that you cannot do yourself – unless you are determined to declare bankruptcy. You could provide your own credit card debt negotiation and provide your own credit card debt solutions. Start out by contacting your credit card creditors and asking them for a reduction in interest and possible temporary lower payments because you are having financial difficulty. They will often work with you.

Then, start putting more money regularly toward your smallest bill, and keep on doing this until it is paid off. Then, take that same extra money, plus the money you regularly paid toward the bill you just paid off – and keep going until you are out of debt. Be sure to lay off putting any more charges on any credit cards, and you will be able to reduce your interest, save money, and get out of debt before long. You will have provided your own credit card debt solutions.
